Ian Pollard – AA lifted by potholes & exceptional weather

AA plc AA claims it is well positioned to return to growth from 2019 and that a revenue rise .of 2% reflects a solid performance especially in what it  calls “roadside.”.  The real reason for roadsides strength was exceptional weather conditions  for which even the AA dare not claim credit, as it benefited from extreme cold and snow in February and March to the hottest summer in recent memory. The severe winter created a pothole ‘epidemic’ and led to a 15 year high in the number of breakdowns it serviced. Despite the support of the weather gods, profit before tax for the six month to the 31st July collapsed by 65% and basic earnings per share by 64%, a financial performance which the company claims was in line with expectations.Hopefully management will be able  ensure that 2019 return to growth, actually happens, irrespective of the weather.

Wine sales were one-fifth higher at £8.12m with cider and beer sales, via associate Curious Drinks, were 7% ahead at £3.68m. Operating profit improved from £346,000 to £470,000 but there was a much larger loss from the Curious Drinks associate so pre-tax profit was lower. The new brewery should be open in the first quarter of 2019. Last year’s fundraising means that Chapel Down has a strong balance sheet and is in a good position to expand. Michael Spencer has increased his stake from 17.5% to 18.2%.

Adnams (ADB) says that beer volumes were nearly 5% higher in the first quarter, while spirit volumes were 30% ahead. However, the first half outcome will be lower than last time because the poor weather hit the company’s pubs and there are additional costs for updating the brewery and IT systems. The second half is expected to be stronger and also to benefit from cost savings.

Cash generation will reduce this, although management wants to be acquisitive. It is taking its time, though, and has not gone through with a couple of deals because they did not meet the criteria.

VI will raise up to £10m in cash at 500p a share and issue a further £10m worth of shares as part of the initial payment, along with some of the cash, for the two mining assets at Rosario and Minaspampa. VI has debt facilities in place. There is a capital expenditure and working capital commitment of £30m for Minaspampa and the mine could be in operation by next August. Rosario requires £15m of capital spending and working capital and already has licences and infrastructure. Annual gold production of 83,720 ounces from the two mines could yield a $43.5m annual profit based on a $1,300/ounce gold price. That is expected to be the initial production and it could end up quadruple that level. Two tolling projects could also generate cash for the group and the first could be up and running in a few months time. VI would be valued at £535m at the flotation price. This is backed up by a Daniel Stewart estimated valuation of £557.8m. The board will retain 73% of the company. The plan is to move to the Main Market in 12 months or so. Trading in the shares of Graphene NanoChem (GRPH) has been suspended ahead of the proposed acquisition of CG TekBuild, which is involved in modular buildings.
